Our Curriculum
At Canolfan Amanwy, we understand that every pupil is unique. Our curriculum is tailored to meet a wide range of needs, supporting each learner’s short-term goals and long-term aspirations through a highly personalised approach.
We teach in four small class groups, with all pupils following an Individual Development Plan (IDP) designed around their specific needs, strengths, and abilities.
A Curriculum Designed Around the Learner
We offer a differentiated and modified curriculum that supports a wide variety of learning styles and developmental stages:
For Pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
These pupils follow an informal curriculum focusing on four key areas:
-
Communication and interaction
-
Physical development
-
Personal, social, and emotional development
-
Cognition and learning (sensory)
These learners follow ‘Routes for Learning’, a nationally recognised assessment framework that supports communication and cognitive development.

For Pupils Following a More Formal Curriculum
Most pupils access a formal, thematic-based curriculum, aligned with the Curriculum for Wales, which includes:
-
Language, Literacy and Communication
-
Mathematics and Numeracy
-
Humanities
-
Science and Technology
-
Expressive Arts
-
Health and Wellbeing
This curriculum is adapted to meet individual abilities and interests, encouraging independence, offering appropriate challenge, and promoting engagement at every level.

Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE)
RSE is a vital part of our curriculum and helps pupils develop a healthy understanding of relationships, body changes, and personal identity as they grow.
We:
-
Deliver content that is age- and developmentally-appropriate
-
Support pupils through puberty, emotional changes, and personal boundaries
-
Answer questions sensitively, honestly, and respectfully
RSE is closely linked to personal development and independence skills, ensuring learners are empowered and informed as they transition into adulthood. We follow a well researched and resourced programme of study.

Enhanced Learning Experiences
We believe that real-life experiences are powerful learning tools. That’s why we actively use our local community to support learning, encourage interaction, and help pupils transfer classroom knowledge into everyday life.
Pupils regularly take part in:
-
Educational visits to local events, places of interest, and community facilities
-
Sporting competitions, including gymnastics, swimming, football, and rugby
-
Urdd Eisteddfod events, where our pupils have proudly achieved:
-
1st place in Creative Dance (National)
-
2nd place in Creative Music (National)
-
We’re incredibly proud of our pupils’ achievements—past and present—and we celebrate every success, big or small.
